Can dogs eat lavender?
The plant in small amounts is low-risk; the essential oil is not.
Why
Lavender contains linalool, which is toxic to dogs in quantity. Sniffing or nibbling a garden plant rarely causes more than mild upset, but lavender essential oil, diffusers and concentrated products can cause serious symptoms.
What to do instead
Skip lavender products and oils; don't let dogs chew the plant.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, reduced appetite; lethargy and breathing changes from oils.
If your dog has eaten lavender, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
