Can dogs eat aloe vera?
No — the latex in the leaves is toxic to dogs.
Why
Aloe's leaf latex contains saponins and anthraquinones that cause vomiting and diarrhoea; the inner gel is less harmful but products for humans aren't for dogs.
What to do instead
Keep aloe plants out of reach; don't apply human aloe products where a dog can lick them.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, tremors in quantity. Vet.
If your dog has eaten aloe vera, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
