Can dogs eat tomatoes?
Ripe red tomatoes in small amounts; never green parts.
Why
Ripe tomato flesh is safe. The stems, leaves and unripe green tomatoes contain solanine and tomatine, which are toxic. Tomato sauces usually contain onion, garlic and salt, which are worse than the tomato itself.
How to serve it
A slice or a few cherry tomatoes, ripe and red, stems removed. Keep dogs out of the vegetable patch.
If they eat too much
Green parts: drooling, weakness, tremors, slow heart rate. Ripe tomato in excess: stomach upset.
How much tomatoes for my dog?
A daily maximum for a healthy adult dog, kept inside the 10% treat rule. Enter body weight.
Up to 15 g a day — about 1 tablespoon · ripe, red, no stem.
Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with a medical condition: ask your vet first.
And for cats?
