Can dogs eat broccoli?
Yes, small amounts — the florets contain isothiocyanates.
Why
Broccoli is rich in fibre and vitamin C, but the florets contain isothiocyanates that irritate the gut in large amounts, and the woody stalks can lodge in the throat. Keep it under 10% of the day's intake.
How to serve it
Steam lightly, chop small, skip the seasoning. Raw is fine in tiny pieces for big dogs.
If they eat too much
Gas, bloating, diarrhoea from too much; choking on stalks.
How much broccoli for my dog?
A daily maximum for a healthy adult dog, kept inside the 10% treat rule. Enter body weight.
Up to 23 g a day — roughly 2 tablespoons (a small handful) · steamed, chopped.
Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with a medical condition: ask your vet first.
