Can dogs eat asparagus?
Cooked, chopped — raw is too tough.
Why
Asparagus isn't toxic but raw stalks are fibrous and hard to chew and digest. Cooked plain, it's a fine occasional vegetable. The asparagus fern (the ornamental plant) is toxic.
How to serve it
Steam, chop small, no butter or salt.
If they eat too much
Vomiting or gas from raw stalks; stinky urine is normal.
How much asparagus for my dog?
A daily maximum for a healthy adult dog, kept inside the 10% treat rule. Enter body weight.
Up to 23 g a day — roughly 2 tablespoons (a small handful) · steamed, chopped.
Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with a medical condition: ask your vet first.
