Can cats eat tomatoes?
Not recommended — the plant is toxic and the flesh is pointless.
Why
The tomato plant (leaves, stems, green fruit) is toxic to cats, and ripe flesh brings nothing a carnivore needs. Cats also chew houseplants, so a tomato plant on the balcony is the real risk.
What to do instead
Skip it and keep the plant out of reach.
Symptoms to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, weakness, dilated pupils.
If your cat has eaten tomatoes, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
