Can dogs eat salt & salty snacks?
Keep salt low — dogs get enough from their food.
Why
A little salt won't hurt, but salty snacks, seasoned meats, and especially large amounts (a whole bag of pretzels, homemade play dough, seawater) cause sodium ion poisoning. Dogs with heart or kidney disease need low sodium.
What to do instead
Skip added salt and salty snacks.
Symptoms to watch for
Excessive thirst and urination, vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors, seizures with large amounts — emergency.
If your dog has eaten salt & salty snacks, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
