Can dogs eat mac and cheese?
Not a treat — fat, salt, dairy and often onion or garlic.
Why
Macaroni cheese is high in fat and salt, heavy in dairy many dogs can't digest, and boxed versions include onion or garlic powder.
What to do instead
Skip. Plain cooked pasta is fine if you must share.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhoea, pancreatitis, allium anaemia from seasoning.
If your dog has eaten mac and cheese, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
