Can dogs eat lemons & limes?
No — citric acid and essential oils upset dogs.
Why
Lemons and limes contain psoralens and essential oils that cause stomach upset and, in quantity, more serious symptoms. Dogs also dislike them, so the 'dog eats lemon' videos are not kind.
What to do instead
Skip citrus, especially peel.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling; sensitivity to light with large amounts.
If your dog has eaten lemons & limes, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
