Can dogs eat apricots?
The flesh is fine; the pit, stem and leaves are toxic.
Why
Apricot flesh gives fibre and vitamin A. As with all stone fruit, the pit contains cyanide compounds and is a choking and blockage hazard, and the plant parts are toxic. Dried apricots are sugar-dense.
How to serve it
One or two pieces of fresh, pitted flesh.
If they eat too much
Diarrhoea from too much; vomiting, breathing trouble, dilated pupils if pits are chewed — emergency.
How much apricots for my dog?
A daily maximum for a healthy adult dog, kept inside the 10% treat rule. Enter body weight.
Up to 15 g a day — about 1 tablespoon · pitted, fresh.
Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with a medical condition: ask your vet first.
