Can dogs eat avocado?
Best avoided — persin, fat and a dangerous pit.
Why
Avocado contains persin, which is mildly toxic to dogs (much less so than to birds), and a lot of fat that can trigger pancreatitis. The pit is exactly the wrong size: it slides down and blocks the intestine. A lick of plain mashed avocado won't hurt most dogs, but it's not a treat to encourage.
What to do instead
Skip it. If your dog raids the bowl, watch for the symptoms below and call your vet if the pit is missing.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhoea; pancreatitis (pain, hunched posture, repeated vomiting) after fatty amounts; blockage signs if the pit is swallowed.
If your dog has eaten avocado, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
