Can dogs eat kale?
Small amounts only — oxalates and isothiocyanates.
Why
Kale is nutrient-dense but contains calcium oxalate and isothiocyanates, which in quantity can cause kidney and bladder stones and stomach irritation. A few chopped leaves are fine for a healthy dog.
How to serve it
Steam, chop, a small spoonful occasionally.
If they eat too much
Gas, stomach upset; urinary problems with large regular amounts.
How much kale for my dog?
A daily maximum for a healthy adult dog, kept inside the 10% treat rule. Enter body weight.
Up to 8 g a day — about 1 tablespoon · steamed, chopped.
Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with a medical condition: ask your vet first.
