Can dogs eat grapes & raisins?
No. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs.
Why
Even a small number of grapes or raisins has caused acute kidney failure in some dogs, and there is no known safe dose — sensitivity varies unpredictably between individuals. Tartaric acid is the suspected toxin. Raisins, sultanas and currants are more concentrated and therefore more dangerous.
What to do instead
Never. This includes grape juice, raisin bread, trail mix, fruit cake and mince pies.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting within hours, then lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, drinking and urinating more or — dangerously — less. Call your vet or an emergency line immediately, even if your dog seems fine.
If your dog has eaten grapes & raisins, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
