Can dogs eat sausages & hot dogs?
Not a treat — salt, fat, seasoning and often garlic or onion.
Why
Sausages and hot dogs are processed meat with high salt, high fat and seasonings that frequently include onion or garlic powder. A bite of a plain cooked sausage won't hurt a big dog; a whole one is a pancreatitis risk.
What to do instead
Skip. Use plain cooked chicken as a high-value treat instead.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhoea, pancreatitis, salt toxicity; onion/garlic anaemia.
If your dog has eaten sausages & hot dogs, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
