Can dogs eat cooked bones?
No. Cooked bones splinter and pierce.
Why
Cooking makes bones brittle. Chicken, turkey, pork and rib bones splinter into shards that can lodge in the throat, perforate the stomach or intestine, or cause a painful blockage. Raw recreational bones are a different debate — discuss them with your vet.
What to do instead
Never give cooked bones. Bin carcasses in a dog-proof bin.
Symptoms to watch for
Gagging, drooling, vomiting, straining, blood in stools, pain, lethargy — emergency.
If your dog has eaten cooked bones, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
