Can dogs eat bacon?
A treat to skip — fat and salt in the worst combination.
Why
Bacon is one of the most common triggers of pancreatitis seen in vet clinics, particularly in small breeds and dogs with a history of it. The salt content is also very high. One small crumb won't harm a healthy large dog, but it should never be a habit.
What to do instead
Skip it. If you want the smell, look for low-fat bacon-flavoured dog treats.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, hunched painful posture, lethargy, diarrhoea — pancreatitis signs need a vet.
If your dog has eaten bacon, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
