Can dogs eat rhubarb?
No. Rhubarb leaves and stalks contain soluble oxalates.
Why
Oxalates bind calcium and can cause kidney failure; the leaves are the most dangerous, but the stalks are also unsafe. Rhubarb in a garden is the usual exposure.
What to do instead
Never; fence off the rhubarb patch.
Symptoms to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, tremors, bloody urine, weakness. Emergency.
If your dog has eaten rhubarb, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
