Can dogs eat potatoes?
Cooked plain potato is fine; raw or green potato is not.
Why
Cooked potato is a digestible starch dogs handle well in small amounts. Raw potatoes, skins and any green parts contain solanine, which is toxic. Chips, crisps and mash with butter add fat and salt.
How to serve it
Boil or bake, peel, serve plain and cool. Small amounts.
If they eat too much
Solanine: vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, confusion. Fatty potato dishes: pancreatitis risk.
How much potatoes for my dog?
A daily maximum for a healthy adult dog, kept inside the 10% treat rule. Enter body weight.
Up to 30 g a day — roughly 2 tablespoons (a small handful) · cooked, peeled, plain.
Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with a medical condition: ask your vet first.
