Can dogs eat plums?
Not recommended — the pit is toxic and dangerous.
Why
Plum flesh is fine in theory, but the pit, stem and leaves contain cyanide compounds, and the pit is a choking and blockage hazard. Fallen plums in a garden are the usual problem.
What to do instead
Skip plums; pick up windfalls.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, breathing difficulty, dilated pupils after pits — emergency.
If your dog has eaten plums, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
