Can dogs eat mushrooms?
Shop mushrooms are safe; wild mushrooms can be deadly.
Why
Plain button, portobello or shiitake mushrooms from a shop are non-toxic to dogs (though most dogs don't want them). The danger is wild mushrooms on walks: several common species cause liver failure and dogs can't tell them apart any better than we can.
What to do instead
Skip mushrooms as a treat — there's no benefit — and stop your dog eating any fungus outdoors.
Symptoms to watch for
Wild mushroom poisoning: vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling, wobbliness, seizures, jaundice, hours to a day later. Emergency, ideally with a sample of the mushroom.
If your dog has eaten mushrooms, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
