Can dogs eat garlic?
No — despite the flea myth, garlic is toxic to dogs.
Why
Garlic is about five times more potent than onion, weight for weight. The 'natural flea repellent' idea is not supported by evidence and the anaemia risk is real. Garlic powder and garlic-heavy dishes are the usual culprits.
What to do instead
Never, in any form or supplement.
Symptoms to watch for
Delayed onset (1–5 days): weakness, pale gums, rapid breathing, dark urine, vomiting, collapse in severe cases. Vet immediately.
If your dog has eaten garlic, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
