Can dogs eat eggplant (aubergine)?
Cooked eggplant in small amounts; skip it for dogs with arthritis or kidney issues.
Why
Eggplant is a nightshade like tomato and potato. Ripe cooked flesh is safe, but it contains solanine in small amounts and oxalates, so it isn't for dogs with kidney problems or inflammatory conditions. Never the leaves.
How to serve it
Bake or steam plain, a few small cubes.
If they eat too much
Stomach upset; allergic itching in some dogs.
How much eggplant (aubergine) for my dog?
A daily maximum for a healthy adult dog, kept inside the 10% treat rule. Enter body weight.
Up to 15 g a day — about 1 tablespoon · cooked plain, cubed.
Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with a medical condition: ask your vet first.
