Can dogs eat coconut?
Small amounts of coconut meat or oil are fine.
Why
Coconut isn't toxic, and small amounts of coconut oil are sometimes given for skin and coat, though the evidence is thin. It's very high in fat, so it can cause stomach upset and pancreatitis; the hard shell and husk are hazards.
How to serve it
A small piece of fresh coconut meat or a quarter-teaspoon of oil for a small dog, occasionally.
If they eat too much
Diarrhoea, greasy stools, vomiting; pancreatitis with fatty amounts.
How much coconut for my dog?
A daily maximum for a healthy adult dog, kept inside the 10% treat rule. Enter body weight.
Up to 8 g a day — about 1 tablespoon · fresh meat, small piece.
Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with a medical condition: ask your vet first.
