Can dogs eat walnuts?
No — mould toxins and blockage risk.
Why
Walnuts, especially black walnuts and any that have sat on the ground, can carry tremorgenic mycotoxins (mould) that cause seizures. They are also fatty and a blockage hazard.
What to do instead
Skip walnuts and clear fallen ones from the garden.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, tremors, seizures after mouldy walnuts — emergency.
If your dog has eaten walnuts, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
