Can dogs eat macadamia nuts?
No. Macadamias cause weakness and tremors in dogs.
Why
Macadamia nuts contain an unidentified toxin that affects dogs specifically; as few as a handful can cause hind-leg weakness, vomiting and tremors. Most dogs recover within 48 hours with care, but it's frightening and needs a vet.
What to do instead
Never. Watch out for macadamia cookies and trail mix.
Symptoms to watch for
Weakness (especially hind legs), vomiting, wobbliness, tremors, fever within 12 hours. Call your vet.
If your dog has eaten macadamia nuts, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
