Can cats eat oranges?
No. Citrus oils and psoralens irritate cats.
Why
Orange peel, leaves and stems contain essential oils and psoralens that are toxic to cats. The flesh is less concentrated but still causes stomach upset, and cats generally hate the smell anyway.
What to do instead
Skip citrus for cats.
Symptoms to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea; skin irritation from contact with peel oils.
If your cat has eaten oranges, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
