Can dogs eat tuna?
Small amounts of tinned tuna in water, occasionally.
Why
Tuna is high in mercury, so it should be an occasional treat, not a regular food. Tinned in spring water is best; brine is salty, oil is fatty. Fresh tuna cooked plain is fine in small amounts.
How to serve it
A spoonful of tinned tuna in water mixed into food, no more than once a week or so.
If they eat too much
Mercury build-up with frequent feeding: tremors, wobbliness, hair loss. Salt from brine.
How much tuna for my dog?
A daily maximum for a healthy adult dog, kept inside the 10% treat rule. Enter body weight.
Up to 15 g a day — about 1 tablespoon · tinned in water, drained.
Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with a medical condition: ask your vet first.
