Can dogs eat mussels & clams?
Cooked, shelled, plain — a few.
Why
Mussels are a good source of omega-3, zinc and manganese and appear in some joint supplements. They must be thoroughly cooked and shelled; raw shellfish carries bacteria and toxins.
How to serve it
Steam plain, remove from shell, one or two for a medium dog.
If they eat too much
Vomiting, diarrhoea from raw or spoiled shellfish; shell injuries.
How much mussels & clams for my dog?
A daily maximum for a healthy adult dog, kept inside the 10% treat rule. Enter body weight.
Up to 15 g a day — about 1 tablespoon · cooked, shelled.
Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with a medical condition: ask your vet first.
