Can dogs eat sardines?
Yes — tinned in water, no salt, a few.
Why
Sardines are rich in omega-3, calcium (from the soft bones) and vitamin D, and low in mercury because they are small fish. Tinned in spring water is best; brine is salty and oil is fatty.
How to serve it
One sardine for a small dog, two or three for a large one, a couple of times a week.
If they eat too much
Loose or greasy stools if too many; salt from brine.
How much sardines for my dog?
A daily maximum for a healthy adult dog, kept inside the 10% treat rule. Enter body weight.
Up to 23 g a day — roughly 2 tablespoons (a small handful) · tinned in water, unsalted.
Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with a medical condition: ask your vet first.
