Can dogs eat chickpeas & hummus?
Plain cooked chickpeas yes; hummus no.
Why
Chickpeas are a legume rich in protein and fibre and appear in some dog foods. Plain, cooked or tinned in water they're fine in small amounts. Hummus contains garlic, lemon and salt, and is off the menu.
How to serve it
A spoonful of plain cooked chickpeas, mashed for small dogs.
If they eat too much
Gas, bloating; garlic poisoning from hummus.
How much chickpeas & hummus for my dog?
A daily maximum for a healthy adult dog, kept inside the 10% treat rule. Enter body weight.
Up to 23 g a day — roughly 2 tablespoons (a small handful) · plain cooked, no hummus.
Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with a medical condition: ask your vet first.
