Can dogs eat bread?
Plain bread is harmless in small amounts; raw dough is dangerous.
Why
A bite of plain white or wholemeal bread won't hurt a dog, though it's empty calories. Raw yeast dough is the real danger: it expands in the warm stomach and produces alcohol. Breads with raisins, garlic, onion, nuts or xylitol are toxic.
How to serve it
A small piece of plain bread, occasionally. Keep rising dough out of reach.
If they eat too much
Raw dough: bloating, pain, vomiting, wobbliness — emergency. Plain bread: nothing beyond weight gain.
How much bread for my dog?
A daily maximum for a healthy adult dog, kept inside the 10% treat rule. Enter body weight.
Up to 15 g a day — about 1 tablespoon · plain, small piece.
Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with a medical condition: ask your vet first.
