Can dogs eat butter?
Not a treat — almost pure fat.
Why
Butter isn't toxic, but a knob of butter is a big fat load that can trigger pancreatitis, especially in small dogs. Buttered toast crumbs are fine; the whole stick left on the counter is not.
What to do instead
Skip. If a dog eats a lot of butter, watch for vomiting and call your vet.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhoea, greasy stools, pancreatitis (pain, hunched posture, lethargy).
If your dog has eaten butter, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
