Can cats eat cherries?
No — pits, stems and leaves are toxic to cats.
Why
Cats are smaller, so the same pit or stem is a proportionally bigger dose, and they gain nothing from the sugary flesh.
What to do instead
Skip cherries entirely.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, laboured breathing, dilated pupils, red gums. Emergency.
If your cat has eaten cherries, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
