Can cats eat catnip?
Yes — the classic cat treat, in moderation.
Why
About two-thirds of cats respond to nepetalactone in catnip with a happy 10-minute 'high'. It's non-toxic and non-addictive. Eating a lot can cause mild vomiting; frequent exposure dulls the response.
How to serve it
A pinch of dried catnip or a fresh leaf, once or twice a week.
If they eat too much
Mild vomiting or diarrhoea if a large amount is eaten.
How much catnip for my cat?
A daily maximum for a healthy adult cat, kept inside the 10% treat rule. Enter body weight.
Up to 1 g a day — a pea-sized piece · dried or fresh, pinch.
Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of daily calories. Puppies, kittens, seniors and pets with a medical condition: ask your vet first.
