Can dogs eat sugar & candy?
Skip — sugar does nothing good, and candy often hides xylitol.
Why
Plain sugar isn't toxic but leads to weight gain, dental disease and, over time, diabetes. Candy and gum frequently contain xylitol, which is deadly, and chocolate.
What to do instead
Skip sweets entirely. Check every sugar-free label for xylitol.
Symptoms to watch for
Stomach upset; long-term weight and dental problems; xylitol or chocolate emergencies depending on the sweet.
If your dog has eaten sugar & candy, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
