Can dogs eat ice cream?
Best not — sugar, dairy and sometimes xylitol or chocolate.
Why
A lick of plain vanilla won't harm most dogs, but ice cream is sugary and dairy-heavy, and many flavours contain chocolate, coffee, macadamia or xylitol. Frozen mashed banana or plain frozen yogurt cubes are a better summer treat.
What to do instead
Skip real ice cream; make frozen banana 'nice cream' instead.
Symptoms to watch for
Diarrhoea, vomiting; toxic ingredient effects depending on flavour.
If your dog has eaten ice cream, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
