Can cats eat milk?
The classic myth — most adult cats are lactose-intolerant.
Why
Kittens drink their mother's milk; adult cats lose the enzyme to digest lactose and cow's milk gives many of them diarrhoea. Lactose-free 'cat milk' from pet shops is the only sensible version, as a treat.
What to do instead
Skip cow's milk. Fresh water is what a cat needs.
Symptoms to watch for
Diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps.
If your cat has eaten milk, don't wait for symptoms.
Call your vet, or in the US the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661), 24 hours a day. Have the amount, the time and any packaging ready.
